Together for the Oceans

our commitment to sustainable fishing
We at Rio Mare believe that the oceans are a valuable asset that we need to protect and respect, minimizing fishing impacts on its biodiversity, so that it can become again a resource also for future generations.
We at Rio Mare believe that the oceans are a valuable asset that we need to protect and respect, minimizing fishing impacts on its biodiversity, so that it can become again a resource also for future generations.
For this reason we are working with WWF for a more sustainable sourcing and to safeguard the oceans.
The partnership with WWF has also the objective of increasing the transparency and the traceability along our entire supply chain and ensuring the respect of human rights.
Find out where our fleet is in real timeWhat we are doing
We are committed to procure tuna from stocks that are healthy and support fishing activities that minimize their environmental impact. This means rethinking our sourcing when necessary, demanding stronger regulations on fisheries management, and promoting projects that help the fleets to reduce their impact on the oceans and to manage their fishing activities in a more sustainable and transparent way.
We are working together with WWF on fishery improvement projects aimed at obtaining Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification and play an active role in decision-making processes for responsible fishing.
The MSC ecolabel, reviews 3 fundamental principles for more sustainable fishing:
- Ensuring healthy and abundant stocks;
- Minimizing the impact of fishing on the marine biodiversity;
- Managing fishing activities responsibly and legally.
You can make a difference too. Buy fish responsibly, choosing quality over quantity and only from sustainable fisheries. But that’s not all: by behaving responsibly, you can help us safeguard our seas and reduce the impact and pressure on the oceans by becoming ambassadors for the health of the oceans and promoting respect for them.

Our conservation project
In 2022, together with WWF Ecuador, we launched a conservation project to protect over 7000 hectares of mangroves in the Gulf of Guayaquil in Ecuador, one of the most mangrove-rich areas on Earth.
Mangroves, like all so-called “Blue Forests”, are crucial for the ecosystem because they provide a habitat for a rich array of living species, protect the coastline from erosion and, most importantly, are able to store up to 9 times more CO2 than tropical forests. This important project aimed at protecting and regenerating this natural habitat will also have a positive impact on local communities by supporting sustainable fishing, which is vital for a thriving local economy.
